The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has cautioned Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to stop politicising security matters and instead focus on tackling the challenges confronting Kano State.
Barau’s reaction followed allegations by the Kano State Government that his recent comments could undermine ongoing security operations. The claims were made after the state’s 34th Executive Council meeting.

“The attention of the media office of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau, has been drawn to false, reckless and malicious claims by the Kano State Government… that he made a statement capable of undermining security efforts,” the statement noted.
Barau maintained that he had never issued any comment that could jeopardise security operations in the state or elsewhere, adding that the government must present evidence if it insists otherwise.
“We challenge them to produce the clip in which Senator Barau made any statement that could undermine security efforts,” he added.

The senator, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, accused the Kano State Government of abandoning governance and resorting to political distractions. According to him, Kano once ranked close to Lagos in terms of prosperity before “misgovernance eroded this progress.”
He said Kano had all it takes to reclaim its lost glory but insisted that the current administration is not taking the necessary steps.
Barau also highlighted several security interventions he has facilitated across the state. These include the provision of operational vehicles to police formations, motorcycles for officers in Kano North, renovation of parts of the state police headquarters, and the construction of police stations in various communities.
He listed further contributions such as supporting the DSS in Kano and facilitating the establishment of key security training institutions, including the NSCDC Training College in Gwarzo, the Police Service Commission Training Institute in Kabo, and the Nigeria Immigration Service Training School in Bichi.
The senator added that he had installed solar-powered streetlights in multiple communities to enhance nighttime patrols.
The statement concluded by urging the Kano State Government to emulate his security interventions rather than “engage in baseless attacks aimed at tarnishing his reputation.”
