The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recommended the use of bicycles as a viable alternative means of transportation to mitigate the negative economic impact of the recent hike in fuel prices.
During the 2023 World Bicycle Day celebration on June 3 in Ibadan, the Oyo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Joshua Adekanye, suggested that Nigerians should consider switching to bicycles for their daily commuting.
Adekanye emphasized that using bicycles would not only reduce the cost of transportation but also significantly decrease carbon emissions from vehicles.

He said:
“Use of bicycle is economically cheap because the cost of a bicycle is not as expensive as using a car or motorcycle.
“Cycling may help prevent and manage medical conditions; helps in improving mental health and reduces stress, among other benefits.”
Also, the Kwara State sector commander of FRSC, Fredrick Ogidan, spoke at the 2023 United Nations World Bicycle Day held in Ilorin, the state capital on Saturday.
This year’s event was themed “Celebrating Bicycles in creating more sustainable, healthy, and inclusive societies.”
Ogidan identified the benefits of cycling to health and the environment as an increase in physical activity, reduction in non-communicable diseases such as cancer and diabetes, and decrease in air and noise pollution.
He advised the Kwara State government to incorporate bicycle tracks in future road construction to ensure the safety of cyclists.
He said:
“Cycling is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport, fostering environmental stewardship and health.”
