The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) will embark on a nationwide strike against the recent hike in fuel prices, effective from Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

The move came after newly sworn-in President Bola Tinubu announced an end to the fuel subsidy regime in the country, leading to an adjustment in pump prices by petrol-filling station owners.

Although the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) released a new template fuel price, the NLC finds the new price regime unacceptable without a clear roadmap to achieving subsidy removal.

The labour group issued a letter to all State Council chairpersons after the National Executive Council meeting, declaring the strike action.

The letter was signed by the NLC General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja.

It read:

We bring you greetings from the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

“You will recall that arising from the National Executive Council meeting held on 2nd June 2023, it was decided that Congress will embark on a nationwide action and withdrawal of services, against the fraudulent increase in the price of fuel across the thirty-six states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the FCT.

“All State Chairpersons are expected to fully abide by the decisions of the National Executive Council.”
