Nigeria’s Super Falcons took a major step toward qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Benin Republic 2-0 in the first leg of their qualifier played on Friday at the Stade de Kegue.

Despite Nigeria’s constant pressure, Benin’s goalkeeper pulled off a series of impressive saves to deny the Super Falcons from taking an early lead. However, the breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Chiwendu Ihezuo calmly slotted home after a well-timed through ball from Deborah Abiodun.

The Super Falcons continued to pile on the pressure, with their midfield controlling the tempo and creating several scoring chances. Just before halftime, Esther Okoronkwo doubled Nigeria’s lead, again thanks to a precise assist from Abiodun.

In the second half, Nigeria maintained possession and kept pushing forward, but Benin’s defense stayed compact to prevent further damage. Despite the missed opportunities, the two-goal lead was enough to give Nigeria a comfortable advantage heading into the return leg.

The Super Falcons will now return home to the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, where they are expected to finish the job next Tuesday and secure their place in the WAFCON 2026 tournament.
