Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured their spot in the final qualifying round of the 2024 Olympic Games after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Monday.

Under the guidance of coach Randy Waldrum, the Nigerian side clinched the two-legged tie 1-0 on aggregate, showcasing their determination and resilience on the field.

The Super Falcons started the match with vigor, taking the lead in the 14th minute courtesy of Esther Okoronkwo. Despite the stiff competition from Cameroon, Okoronkwo managed to find the back of the net amid a goalmouth scramble, giving Nigeria the crucial advantage.

Throughout the game, the hosts continued to apply pressure on the Indomitable Lionesses, creating several scoring opportunities. Juventus midfielder Jennifer Echegini came close to extending Nigeria’s lead early in the second half but was denied by Cameroon’s goalkeeper.

Despite Nigeria’s dominance, Okoronkwo squandered a golden opportunity to double the lead just before halftime, failing to capitalize on a well-executed pass from Ashleigh Plumptre.

With no further goals in the second half, the match ended with a tense finish as Cameroon’s Enganemben Annie was sent off for unsporting conduct in stoppage time.

Looking ahead, the Super Falcons are set to face either South Africa or Tanzania in the final round, with South Africa holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg.
