Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 defeat to Brazil in their opening Group C match at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Falcons started strong, creating three good chances in the first 25 minutes. Chiwendu Ihezuo’s close-range shot was saved by Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena, who also made a superb save to deny midfielder Christy Ucheibe from outside the box. Osinachi Ohale then headed over the bar from Toni Payne’s excellent cross.

Brazil captain Marta had a goal disallowed for offside in the 33rd minute, but Brazil took the lead through Gabi Nunes eight minutes before halftime. Nunes scored after being set up by Marta.

In the second half, Brazil continued to dominate, with Marta hitting the post six minutes after the break. Lorena made another crucial save to deny Ajibade. Brazil maintained their lead to top Group C, along with Spain, who defeated Japan 2-1 earlier in the day.

The Super Falcons will face world champions Spain in their next game in Nantes on Sunday.
