The Supreme Court is set to deliver judgment today, July 2, 2025, in the contentious legal battle over the Edo governorship election tribunal between Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Governor Okpebholo was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the September 21, 2024 poll, after polling 291,667 votes against Ighodalo’s 247,274.

However, Ighodalo rejected the outcome, citing overvoting, non-compliance with the Electoral Act, and irregularities in collation.

In January 2025, the election tribunal dismissed Ighodalo’s petition, citing lack of credible evidence and poorly tendered documents.

On May 29, the Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld the tribunal’s ruling, faulting the PDP legal team for failing to link allegations to specific polling units and attempting to rely on “dumped documents.”

The appellate court also struck out the BVAS machines presented by Ighodalo’s team, ruling that they were “improperly tendered.”

Undeterred, the PDP candidate proceeded to the Supreme Court, where he maintains that the lower courts ignored core issues, including tampered Form EC 25B, missing serial numbers, and alleged collation fraud.
