A man suspected to be a vandal was electrocuted on Thursday while allegedly attempting to tamper with a power transformer along Ehi Road in Aba, Abia State.

The lifeless body of the unidentified man was discovered at the scene with a jackknife and pliers, indicating he may have been trying to steal vital components from the transformer when he was fatally shocked.

Some residents of Aba who reacted to the incident recalled past cases of vandalism in their neighborhoods, where power installations were damaged or rendered non-functional. Others, however, have called for a thorough investigation to confirm the man’s identity and clarify the exact circumstances surrounding his death.

Confirming the incident to DAILY POST on Friday, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the matter was reported to the police on July 24, 2025, by one Okorie Agu of No. 132 Ehi Road, Aba, who was accompanied by two others.

According to DSP Chinaka, the report stated that an unidentified man attempting to vandalize a transformer was electrocuted at the address. She noted that officers from the command promptly visited the scene.

She also confirmed that Aba Power Ltd was contacted before the body was evacuated and deposited at St. Anthony Hospital’s Mortuary in Aba.

Chinaka added that police investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.
