Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has warned that Nigeria is in grave danger and urgently needs salvation, calling on Nigerians to come together to rescue the country from its deepening challenges.

Tambuwal made the remarks at a colloquium organised in Abuja to mark his 60th birthday, where he lamented that Nigeria had fallen far below the expectations of its founding fathers.

He said the country was not where it was envisaged to be at independence, noting that even the architects of Nigeria’s democracy, whether living or dead, would be disappointed with the present state of affairs.

According to Tambuwal, the event was not meant for personal celebration but for sober reflection on the nation’s condition and the urgent need to chart a new course.

“This is about good governance. It is not about merrymaking. It is about finding a pathway for our country. Where we are today is unfortunate,” he said.

The former Sokoto State governor stressed that Nigerians who genuinely believed in the country and were not driven by selfish interests could not be satisfied with the current situation.

He argued that the nation’s problems were rooted in fundamental flaws in governance and called for honest acknowledgement of the failures.

“Our country is in peril, and we are looking for salvation. This is not about partisanship or political parties alone. It is a collective process,” Tambuwal stated.

Addressing dignitaries at the event, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Tambuwal emphasised that every Nigerian had a role to play in rebuilding the country.

He noted that while political parties must present clear programmes and ideas, citizens must also remain actively involved in shaping the nation’s future.
“We have nowhere else to go. We must remain in Nigeria and do the right thing so that we can have the right leadership,” he said.

Tambuwal further pledged to recommit himself to democratic values and to work with like-minded Nigerians committed to achieving good governance and strengthening democracy in the country.
