Taribo Under Fire Over Role in Rufai Burial

Former Super Eagles Star Taribo West has come under public pressure after veteran journalist Godwin Enakhena accused him of a largely passive response to late goalkeeper Peter Rufai’s burial.

Enakhena posted a donors list on X and named the Lagos State Government as the top contributor (₦15 million).

He also listed the NFF (₦3 million), Yemi Idowu (₦1 million), the Lagos State Sports Commission director-general (₦1 million), the Benue FA chairman (₦1 million) and Odion Ighalo (₦500,000).

Taribo West Faces Questions Over Rufai Burial

Enakhena said the fund had topped just over ₦20 million.

“Taribo, how much did you give? How much did the ex-internationals give – the people you played with, how much did you give Dodomayana?” – Enakhena challenged.

Peter Rufai, popularly Dodo Mayana died at 61 after a long illness.

He earned 65 caps and helped the Super Eagles win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and reach their first World Cup.

Following his demise, Taribo told mourners the perceived neglect felt “disheartening” and said he would not encourage his son to play for Nigeria.

His reaction and Enakhena’s public challenge have pushed the debate into the open, forcing fans and former players to ask how the game should support its icons.
