Eyewitnesses said the incident began when the commander was having a casual conversation with a young woman known to him. Two men, believed to be intoxicated, allegedly approached them, with one of the men confronting the woman.

“One of them started harassing the girl, claiming he was her teacher and demanding to know why she didn’t greet him,” an eyewitness told Daily Post.

As the exchange grew tense, the armed commander reportedly attempted to calm the situation, explaining that he was in the middle of a discussion. However, the teacher allegedly felt insulted, leading to a heated argument.

According to witnesses, the situation escalated when the two men attempted to forcefully seize the commander’s service rifle, causing panic among residents.

“They went straight for the rifle. People began running because an accidental discharge was feared,” the source said.

“No sane person would try to grab a loaded gun from a security officer.”

During the struggle, the rifle reportedly discharged, fatally wounding Mr Iorkase, who died almost instantly from severe injuries.

The witness further claimed that as residents fled the scene, the second man allegedly produced a locally made pistol and shot the BSCPG commander in the right hand before escaping.

Police were immediately alerted and responded swiftly, arresting the BSCPG commander for questioning and evacuating the teacher’s body. The commander was later placed in protective custody to aid investigations.

Confirming the incident, the State Commander of the BSCPG, Capt. Ayuma Ajobi (retd.), said the case had been handed over to the police.

“The incident occurred, and the police are currently investigating to establish the full facts,” he said.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, said she was yet to receive a formal briefing on the matter.
