Tems’ Manager Decries Low Streaming Revenue For Nigerian Artists Compared To Global Markets

Muyiwa Awoniyi, the manager of Grammy-winning singer Tems, has shed light on the financial challenges Nigerian artists face when it comes to streaming revenue, especially in comparison to other regions around the world.

During an interview on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Awoniyi explained that music streams from Nigeria generate far less income than those from countries like Sweden, where streaming giant Spotify is headquartered.

He revealed that one million streams from Nigerian listeners bring in just about $300, while the same number of streams from Sweden can earn between $8,000 and $10,000. The disparity, he said, is due to Spotify’s regional pricing model and Nigeria’s lower subscription rates — around N900 per user.

“A lot of people don’t realize how much the territory you’re streamed in affects your earnings,” Awoniyi noted. “If your intellectual property is tied to a region with low payouts, your revenue is significantly limited.”

The seasoned music executive highlighted how the nation’s economic struggles and low consumer purchasing power only worsen the situation for local artists trying to make a living from digital platforms.

His concerns align with earlier comments by Burna Boy, who cautioned artists not to rely too heavily on Nigerian streams for income, adding that local chart success doesn’t always reflect financial reward.

Awoniyi, who also manages acts like Omah Lay and Nonso Amadi through his agency BSB Management, emphasized the importance of artists positioning their work for a global audience to increase earnings and sustainability in the industry.
