Tems emerged as the sole Nigerian winner at this year’s BET Awards, held at Los Angeles’s Peacock Theater on Sunday night. Her track “Me & U” clinched the Dr Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award, triumphing over esteemed nominees such as Kirk Franklin and Shirley Caesar.
However, her compatriots Ayra Starr and Asake did not fare as well, with Tyla from South Africa winning both the coveted Best International Act and Best New Artist awards. Ayra Starr also missed out on the BET Her award, which went to Victoria Monét.
Meanwhile, Seyi Vibez lost to South Africa’s Makhadzi in the Best New International Act category. Additionally, Burna Boy was defeated by Usher for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and by Kendrick Lamar for Best Hip-hop Artist.
