Erik ten Hag assesses Andre Onana’s debut for Manchester United in a 2-0 defeat against Real Madrid, acknowledging that there is significant work needed in the defensive department.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper, Onana, made his first appearance for the Red Devils in a friendly match against Real Madrid at NRG Stadium in Houston, as part of United’s pre-season tour of the United States.
Unfortunately, he conceded two goals from Jude Bellingham and Joselu, leading to Real Madrid’s victory.

Ten Hag acknowledged that playing against a strong team like Real Madrid would always result in conceding chances.
However, he praised Onana’s performance and believes there’s room for improvement.
Regarding the defensive aspect, Ten Hag pointed out that there is work to be done between Onana and the defenders to ensure better coordination and avoid conceding goals, like the one from the back post in the second goal.

Despite the defensive issues, Manchester United’s attacking front also struggled to score, with the team drawing a blank.
They are actively pursuing another striker, potentially Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund, and Ten Hag confirmed that the club is dedicated to securing the right player to fill the position.
The team has one more friendly match against Borussia Dortmund before leaving America, and they aim to have their new No.9 signed well before the start of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign against Wolves on August 14th.
