The second-leg tie was abandoned shortly after halftime with the score at 1-1 after stones, bottles, seats and even a stun grenade were thrown at the opposing fans.
One visiting supporter had to leap from the stands to save himself from the attackers, while others were bashed and stripped of their belongings after home fans raided the away section.
The Ambassador of Chile to Argentina reported the stabbing of people, with some seriously wounded.
President of Chile Gabriel Boric demanded justice and blamed the organizers.
Both clubs deplored the violence, but the president of Independiente, Nestor Grindetti, accused the Chilean fans of stirring it up and termed their actions “truly reprehensible.”
The incident is another reminder of the endemic nature of football violence in South America, recalling the deadly clashes that took place in Santiago in April before a Copa Libertadores venue between Colo Colo and Fortaleza of Brazil.
