Witnesses said the heavily armed attackers, who had laid an ambush between 1pm and 2pm, opened fire on the convoy, causing panic among the lawmaker’s aides and supporters.

A security source told SaharaReporters that one soldier died instantly, while about eight others sustained varying degrees of injury. The wounded personnel were immediately taken to the General Hospital, New Bussa, for treatment.

“At least four supporters of Hon. Damisa were also hit by stray bullets, though medical sources confirmed none of them lost their lives,” the source said.

About 11 vehicles in the convoy were reportedly vandalised during the attack, riddled with bullets and severely damaged before being evacuated from the scene.

Despite the intensity of the assault, Hon. Damisa escaped unhurt, thanks to the quick intervention of his security escorts and troops from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Babanna, who responded swiftly to a distress call.

Their arrival led to a fierce gun duel that forced the terrorists to retreat into the nearby forest.

Security operatives have since launched a search operation to track down the fleeing assailants.
