Thailand Approves Same Sex Marriage, Passes Bill Into Law

Thailand has joined the list of Asian countries to adopt LGBTQ.

The Lesbian Gay Bi-sexual, Transgender and Queer movement has been spreading across the globe, and Thailand has hoped on the boat, being the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize it.

Following a vote of 130 (in support) to 4 (opposing) and 18 abstentions, the Senate Upper House gave a final approval to changes to the marriage laws, to accommodate and allow same sex couple tie the knot.

The new legislation will now go to King Maha Vajiralongkorn for royal assent and come into force 120 days after publication in the official Royal Gazette.

Thailand joins other countries like Taiwan and Nepal in Asia, as they fully embrace this movement.

Speaking on this new development after the vote, an LGBTQ activist, Plaifah Kyoka said;

“We are very proud of everyone involved in this historic moment. You have helped to bring about a massive change,”

“Today love wins over prejudice.”

Also speaking on this, a member of the movement, Kevin Pehthai Thanomkhet, 30, told AFP.

“My partner has one boy and I want to have legal rights to formally adopt him as my child and to have a say about his well-being. This bill will allow it,”
