A heartbreaking incident occurred on Wednesday in Jinkiri Village, located in Tirwun, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis, where three teenage boys drowned while swimming in a river.

The tragedy bears resemblance to a previous incident in May, where four workers from the Gubi Water Treatment Plant lost their lives during a maintenance operation.

In a statement, the spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the identities of the victims as Habibu Mohammed and Abubakar Mohammed, both aged 16, and 14-year-old Zailani Sule—all residents of Durum village.

“The teenagers drowned while swimming in the river after engaging in mining work,” Wakil said.

He noted that the incident happened at about 1:00 p.m., and all rescue efforts were unsuccessful, as the victims were pronounced dead at the hospital.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the boys went swimming shortly after mining. The Bauchi State Police Command under Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and emphasizes the need for greater caution around water bodies, especially during adverse weather conditions,” he added.

Police confirmed that the bodies were handed over to the families for burial after medical examination at the Bauchi State Specialist Hospital. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
