President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure by three years, despite his impending retirement age of 60, which he will reach tomorrow, September 4, 2024.

According to sources at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the IGP’s tenure was extended on Monday, with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, presenting Egbetokun with a letter confirming his tenure extension.

“The IGP received his letter of tenure extension from Akume on Monday morning,” a senior security officer at the SGF Office confirmed.

This move comes after the Senate passed a bill amending the Police Act 2020, which introduced a new clause allowing police officers to serve for 40 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.

Egbetokun, who was appointed IGP in June 2023, would have been due for retirement tomorrow.
