Trump had earlier stated that “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria” and vowed that the U.S. would act to protect Nigerian Christians.

He emphasised that Nigeria’s government “opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it,” adding that religious freedom and tolerance have always been integral to the country’s collective identity.
“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians,” the president stated.
Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to work closely with the United States government and the international community to promote cooperation on protecting faith communities globally.
