- President Tinubu granted Maryam Sanda a state pardon after spending over six years in prison for the murder of her husband.
- The presidential clemency list includes 175 convicts and former convicts.
- According to Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s decision was influenced by reports of good conduct among inmates.
- The President’s gesture also extended to correcting past injustices.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted clemency to Mrs. Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death in January 2020 for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, the son of former PDP National Chairman, Haliru Bello.
Sanda was arrested in November 2017 and had remained in custody for over six years before receiving the presidential pardon. Her name appeared among 175 individuals who benefited from Tinubu’s amnesty initiative announced on Saturday evening by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

“Illegal miners, white-collar convicts, remorseful drug offenders, foreigners, Major General Mamman Vatsa, Major Akubo, Professor Magaji Garba, and capital offenders such as Maryam Sanda, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and the other Ogoni Eight were among those granted mercy by the President,” Onanuga said.
He explained that the President’s decision followed recommendations showing that several inmates had demonstrated genuine remorse, acquired vocational skills, or enrolled in academic programmes such as those offered by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
