President Bola Tinubu has signed into law the Nigeria Data Protection Bill, 2023.

The new legislation provided a legal framework for the protection of personal information and the practice of data protection in Nigeria.

The new law established the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and replaced the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) previously established by former President Muhammadu Buhari in February 2022.

Companies and organizations handling such data were expected to comply with the necessary regulations.

According to reports, the bill was introduced to the Senate and House of Representatives for consideration and passage on Tuesday, 4 April 2023, via a letter from former President Muhammadu Buhari.
