Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and law professor from Kogi State, will oversee upcoming elections in Anambra and the FCT.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday officially swore in Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and attended by top government officials and members of the Federal Executive Council.
Professor Amupitan’s appointment followed his confirmation by the Senate after his nomination by President Tinubu. He succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended earlier this month.
A law professor at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Amupitan hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

He was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014 and is renowned for his expertise in company law, evidence law, corporate governance, and privatisation law.
With his new role, Amupitan is expected to supervise the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for early November 2025 and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election in February 2026.
His appointment is seen as part of President Tinubu’s effort to strengthen electoral integrity and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
