Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described the Electric Tricycle Empowerment Initiative as a new chapter for young Nigerians, especially those who rely on informal transportation for survival. He said the initiative supports the Renewed Hope Agenda by promoting youth employment, economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Olawande explained that thousands of young people will benefit from the programme through opportunities in electric tricycle operation, battery repairs, charging-station services and maintenance. He noted that previous youth empowerment programmes rarely reached those working in transportation and informal sectors, but the new initiative is designed to change that.
He added that the ministry is also partnering with NASENI to develop locally-made electric vehicles that meet global standards. He announced that the government will provide start-up grants and more support schemes before the end of the year to help young business owners move into the electric mobility value chain.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Maryam Keshinro, represented by Joseph Samuel, called the launch a major milestone for Nigeria’s transport sector. She said the Electric Tricycle Empowerment Initiative will address unemployment, rising transport costs and environmental challenges by creating green jobs and expanding clean mobility options.

The National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (NATOMORAS) also praised the Federal Government for introducing electric tricycles. The association’s representative, Alhaji Usman Buba Gwoza, said the project will help millions of riders struggling with fuel prices while modernizing Nigeria’s transport sector.
He described the rollout of electric tricycles as a symbol of hope for operators across the country. According to him, NATOMORAS has more than 18 million registered members in both rural and urban areas, and the adoption of electric tricycles will reduce youth unemployment and strengthen Nigeria’s green economy drive.
