The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has described the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the worst in Nigeria’s history, insisting the country needs a major political reset.

Speaking on preparations for the 2027 elections, he said the opposition was ready to challenge the ruling government, but added that the real question was whether Nigerians were prepared to demand change.

He stated that democracy ultimately rests in the hands of the people, noting that citizens must hold elected officials accountable through their votes.

The SDP chieftain also criticised the current Electoral Act, arguing that certain provisions do not guarantee a level playing field for all political parties.

According to him, the law should encourage voter participation and strengthen the credibility of elections rather than favour those already in power.

He urged lawmakers to amend contentious clauses and ensure that the electoral framework reflects the will of Nigerians.

Adebayo also backed concerns raised by the Inter Party Advisory Council over the electoral law, although he cautioned that boycotting elections should be considered only as a last resort.

On the possibility of opposition alliances ahead of the next presidential election, the former candidate said he was not ready to align with political figures who had previously been part of governments he accused of poor performance.

He maintained that the SDP would focus on mobilising Nigerians who desire transparent governance and accountability.

Adebayo further argued that removing the current leadership without changing the political culture would not solve the country’s challenges.

He, however, expressed confidence that if Nigerians fully participate in the electoral process, credible elections could still be achieved.

According to him, higher voter turnout would strengthen democracy and reduce manipulation of the electoral process.
