President Bola Tinubu has given a directive to reduce the number of officials in Nigeria’s delegation to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) sessions in New York, United States (US).

Tinubu’s directive was announced by the Chief of Staff to the President, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, during a one-day retreat organized by the State House management for the leaders of government agencies under its oversight.

According to Gbajabiamila, the President has instructed that only officials with official business at the UNGA should attend.

He added that the directive is aimed at reducing the cost of governance and ensuring that only those with legitimate reasons attend the assembly.

Gbajabiamila stated that in the past, some individuals have used the opportunity of international meetings like the UNGA to attend to personal businesses.

However, Tinubu has directed that this time, the delegation will be limited to only those who have official business at the assembly.

The Chief of Staff stressed that the President’s directive was clear: “If you have no business at the UNGA, you should not travel to America.”

It was revealed that the directive was a test of the administration’s commitment to reducing the cost of governance and ensuring that public officials were held accountable for their actions.

The UNGA sessions were scheduled to take place in New York in the coming weeks, and it remains to be seen how the President’s directive will be implemented.
