Essential workers exempted from public holiday directive
The Benue State Government has declared today, Wednesday, June 18, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the scheduled condolence visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The announcement comes in the wake of recent deadly attacks in several Benue communities, which have left dozens dead and displaced. President Tinubu had earlier stated that he would cut short his itinerary to visit the state in person and commiserate with the people over the tragic events.
In a statement signed by Mrs Serumun Deborah Aber, Secretary to the State Government, the President will embark on a one-day official visit described as “significant and symbolic,” aimed at comforting victims and evaluating security interventions.

“The President is expected to condole with the government and people of Benue State following the spate of violent attacks,” the government said.
The statement clarified that the work-free day applies to public workers and residents across the state, but excludes essential service personnel including health workers, security agencies, and banking staff.

The state government also encouraged citizens to show solidarity by turning out in large numbers to receive the President and his delegation during the visit.
“This is a moment of unity for all Benue citizens to demonstrate strength in the face of adversity,” the statement added.
Tinubu’s visit comes amid mounting national outrage over the scale and frequency of attacks in the state.
Activists and religious leaders have repeatedly called for concrete federal action to address the worsening insecurity.
