The 28-year-old clocked 12.29s to take silver, while Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji stunned the field with a national record of 12.24s to claim gold.

Amusan’s silver brought more than just another medal – it came with a substantial financial reward.

World Athletics pays $35,000 for silver, and Nigeria’s kit partner Hiracer had pledged a $20,000 bonus for silver medallists before the championships.

“This company said they would give any gold medallist $30,000, silver medallist $20,000, and bronze medallist $10,000. So they should concentrate, work hard and try to win, and then they will win their money,” – he stated.

That combination lifted Amusan’s take-home to $55,000.

The final was razor-tight. American Grace Stark took bronze in 12.34s, while Masai Russell just missed the podium after clipping hurdles and finishing in 12.44s.

The field included Pia Skrzyszowska, Devynne Charlton and defending champion Danielle Williams, making Amusan’s podium finish even more impressive.

The current world record holder in the 100 metres hurdles, Amusan had looked strong through the rounds, winning her semi-final in 12.36s and entering the final among the favourites.

Kambundji’s late surge proved decisive though.

The silver is Nigeria’s 12th medal in the history of the World Championships and solidifies Amusan’s place among the top hurdlers in the world.

The result matters for her legacy too. After her world-record run and gold in Eugene 2022, the Ijebu-Ode born has remained a constant presence at the sharp end of major finals.

Tobi Amusan’s reputation will grow even more as a result of this performance, and she will continue to be considered for future major events.
