A shocking new study has revealed that black plastic used in everyday items such as children’s toys, takeout containers, and kitchen utensils may contain alarmingly high levels of toxic flame retardants.

These harmful chemicals, which have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, and reproductive issues, are believed to be leaching into products during the recycling process.

The study, conducted by environmental advocacy group Toxic-Free Future, found that some products, such as black plastic pirate coin beads worn by children, contained up to 22,800 parts per million of total flame retardants – almost 3 per cent by weight.

Other products, including a black plastic sushi tray, contained high levels of decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE), a chemical banned in 2021 due to its links to cancer and other health problems.

The researchers warn that exposure to these contaminated products could lead to daily intake of toxic flame retardants, posing a significant risk to human health.

Experts are urging consumers to avoid using black plastic for food contact materials and to be cautious when purchasing toys with black plastic pieces.
