According to military sources, the vehicle was stopped at a checkpoint during a routine security operation. A search of the car led to the discovery of a large sum of money concealed inside a “Ghana must go” bag and a sack.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the five suspects — two women and three men — initially claimed they were unaware of the total amount of money in their possession. They later alleged that the cash was intended for distribution to beneficiaries of a non-governmental organisation.

Confirming the arrest, Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), said additional items were recovered from the suspects during the operation.

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI intercepted five suspects conveying approximately ₦37 million suspected to be linked to terrorist financing,” the statement said.

“During the search, about ten assorted mobile phones were also recovered from the suspects.”

The suspects and recovered items have been taken into custody for further investigation, as security agencies work to establish the source and intended use of the funds.

Military authorities reaffirmed their commitment to disrupting terror financing networks and maintaining sustained security operations across the North-East region.
