United States President Donald Trump has issued a 50-day ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin, threatening unprecedented tariffs and secondary sanctions unless hostilities in Ukraine are halted.
Trump, speaking at a White House briefing on Monday, vowed to impose “very severe” trade penalties, including 100% tariffs on critical Russian exports such as fertilizers, chemicals and nuclear materials, should Moscow fail to end its military operations.
“Putin is all talk,” Trump declared. “We will no longer tolerate attacks on Ukrainian civilians and the destabilization of Europe. If peace isn’t reached in 50 days, Russia will face tariffs like never before.”

As part of broader Western efforts, Trump pledged enhanced military assistance to Ukraine, with NATO partners coordinating weapons procurement and transfers to Kyiv.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who joined Trump at the announcement, said the move was designed to strengthen European security and send a clear message to Moscow.

Analysts say the potential tariffs, combined with secondary sanctions on nations still buying Russian oil, could severely disrupt Russia’s trade flows and energy revenues, which continue to underpin the Kremlin’s war machine.
Bilateral trade between the US and Russia has already plummeted to less than 10% of pre-war levels, and experts warn that fresh measures could drive Moscow further into economic isolation.
