President of the United States, Donald Trump, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, demanding the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping or face targeted attacks on its energy infrastructure.

The warning comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following what has been described as Tehran’s most destructive strike yet on Israel, marking a sharp escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Trump’s ultimatum was issued less than 24 hours after he hinted at possibly winding down military operations after three weeks of hostilities, signalling a sudden shift in posture.

Posting on his Truth Social platform, the US leader warned that failure to fully reopen the strategic waterway within the deadline — set for 23:44 GMT on Monday — would trigger decisive military action targeting Iranian power and energy facilities.

The development also follows reports that the vital global oil transit route remains largely closed, raising concerns in international markets, while additional US Marines are being deployed to the region to reinforce ongoing operations.

Reacting, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said the country had only restricted access to vessels belonging to nations involved in attacks against Iran, noting that ships from neutral countries would continue to receive support.

Meanwhile, Iran’s military, through the state-aligned Fars News Agency, warned that any US strike would be met with retaliation, including attacks on energy and strategic infrastructure belonging to the United States and its allies in the region.

The situation has further intensified fears of a broader regional conflict, with global attention now focused on whether diplomatic efforts can avert a potential escalation.
