Former U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled a new missile defense initiative named the Golden Dome, proposing an advanced shield to protect the U.S. from global and space-based missile threats.

The system is expected to cost up to $175 billion.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major national defense initiative called the Golden Dome, a sophisticated missile shield system aimed at protecting the U.S. from threats including long-range, hypersonic, and space-launched weapons.
Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump revealed an initial $25 billion funding allocation for the system, which he estimates will ultimately cost around $175 billion and be operational within three years.
“In the campaign I promised the American people I would build a cutting-edge missile defense shield.

“Today I am pleased to announce we have officially selected architecture for this state-of-the-art system. Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world, and even if they are launched from space,”he added.
Trump named U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein to lead the project and noted that Canada has expressed interest in joining the effort.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the system is designed to counter “cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, drones—whether they’re conventional or nuclear.”
The Congressional Budget Office, however, estimates that space-based interceptors alone could cost between $161 billion and $542 billion over 20 years.
The announcement drew immediate backlash from China, which denounced the plan as a threat to global stability. “The United States puts its own interests first and is obsessed with seeking its own absolute security,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated. “(The plan) heightens the risk of space becoming a battlefield, fuels an arms race, and undermines international security.”

Earlier this month, China and Russia had jointly criticized similar U.S. proposals as “deeply destabilising.”
The Golden Dome concept is inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome system, but the U.S. version aims for far broader reach. With rising missile capabilities from countries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, and the increasing role of drones in modern warfare, the U.S. defense strategy is shifting toward comprehensive missile interception technologies spanning land, sea, air, and space.
