The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has said he must be personally involved in the process of selecting Iran’s next leader following the reported death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ali Hosseini Khamenei.

Speaking in an interview with Axios, Trump said Mojtaba Khamenei, widely viewed as a potential successor to his father, would be “unacceptable,” stressing that Washington wants a leader capable of bringing peace and stability to Iran.

“We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” Trump said, adding that Mojtaba Khamenei lacked the weight and experience to lead the country.

The U.S. president compared the unfolding situation to political developments in Venezuela, where Delcy Rodríguez emerged as the country’s leader after U.S. strikes reportedly led to the removal and capture of former president Nicolás Maduro.

Meanwhile, uncertainty persists over who is currently in charge in Iran following recent U.S. military strikes and the reported death of Khamenei, raising fresh concerns about leadership succession and political stability in the country.
