  • He insists Tinubu must protect Nigeria’s sovereignty and avoid any diplomatic move that makes the country look weak.

Femi Fani-Kayode has raised strong objections to the possibility of President Bola Tinubu holding a diplomatic meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking at the 2025 Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association, Akure Branch, the former minister said the idea is troubling and could easily turn into a national embarrassment.

According to him, Trump is not interested in peace or security in Nigeria. Instead, he believes Trump wants to provoke religious tension and use it as an excuse to interfere in the country’s internal affairs. Fani-Kayode described the move as a serious threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

His warning came after Trump ordered the U.S. Department of War to prepare for “action in Nigeria” following claims that the Nigerian government is not protecting Christians from attacks. Tinubu’s media aide, Daniel Bwala, confirmed that both leaders would meet soon to discuss the alleged killings.

Fani-Kayode completely rejected that approach. He argued that the fight against terrorism is not about religion and that extremists attack both Muslims and Christians. He stressed that Nigeria must not negotiate with terrorists and must not rely on foreign intervention.

According to him, the responsibility to destroy terrorist groups rests solely on President Tinubu. He called for stronger military action and “total annihilation” of all terror cells operating in Nigeria.

He also accused the U.S. of having a history of supporting extremist groups to destabilize nations. In his words, “They created Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram, and others. They fund them and use them to weaken countries.”
