President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) due to its mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises.

Trump made the announcement on Monday, January 20, citing the WHO’s failure to act independently and its requirement of “unfairly onerous payments” from the US.

According to Trump, “World Health ripped us off, everybody rips off the United States. It’s not going to happen anymore.”

Dr. Ashish Jha, who served as White House COVID-19 response coordinator during the Biden administration, called Trump’s decision a “strategic error.”

Jha warned that the US withdrawal would create a power vacuum that China could fill, giving China more political influence around the world.

“WHO is a pretty essential organization — and with America’s withdrawal, it creates a political vacuum that only one country can fill — and that is China,” Jha said.
