According to the notice, U.S. embassies and consulates may release additional local security guidance, and Americans are encouraged to follow those instructions closely.
The department also warned that:
• U.S. diplomatic facilities have been targeted in the past
• Airspace closures could disrupt international travel
• Groups that support Iran might target U.S. interests or locations associated with Americans worldwide
The alert comes amid escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Reports indicate that U.S. and Israeli forces carried out airstrikes in February 2026 targeting Iranian military and strategic facilities. In response, Iran launched missile and drone attacks against Israeli territory, U.S. military bases, and allied Gulf countries.
Several developments increased concern:
• A projectile reportedly struck the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad, hitting a helipad area.
• Iranian officials issued warnings that tourist areas and economic targets could be attacked.
• Threats were also made against energy infrastructure and banks linked to U.S. interests in the Persian Gulf.
These incidents have raised fears that Iran-backed militant groups could carry out attacks on American interests in different countries, not only in the Middle East.
Security analysts believe the situation could lead to:
• Increased security at U.S. embassies worldwide
• Travel warnings for American citizens
• Heightened military and diplomatic tensions in the Middle East
So far, casualties have been reported in Iran, Israel, and among U.S. forces, with thousands affected by the ongoing conflict.
