The United States government has revoked 85,000 visas belonging to foreign nationals — including an unspecified number of Nigerians — as part of President Donald Trump’s sweeping immigration enforcement drive.

The U.S. Department of State announced the figure on Tuesday in an update praising President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for sustaining what it called “a clear mandate” on immigration control. The tally represents all visas cancelled since January, when Mr Trump began his second term.

“85,000 visa revocations since January,” the State Department said, adding that the crackdown “won’t stop anytime soon.”

The latest update shows that an additional 5,000 visas were revoked in the last month alone, rising from 80,000 reported in November.

Earlier in November, the State Department listed assault, theft, and driving under the influence as prominent reasons for visa cancellation. Other grounds include terrorism, support for terrorism, public safety concerns, and overstaying permitted visa duration.

The development aligns with Mr Trump’s earlier pledge to execute the largest deportation exercise in U.S. history and intensify action against illegal immigration.

The Department of State did not disclose how many Nigerians were affected in the latest round of revocations.
