- US withdraws from 66 international organisations under Trump order
- Decision follows a comprehensive federal review, says Marco Rubio
- Trump cites threats to US sovereignty and taxpayer funds
- More global institutions may face future withdrawal
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed that the United States’ decision to pull out of 66 international organisations followed what the Trump administration described as a detailed review of institutions considered wasteful, ineffective, or harmful.
In a statement released on January 7, 2026, titled “Withdrawal from Wasteful, Ineffective, or Harmful International Organisations,” Rubio said the move was taken in line with Executive Order 14199, signed by President Donald Trump.

“Today, in furtherance of Executive Order 14199, President Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations identified as part of our review,” Rubio said.
He explained that the review process is still ongoing and could lead to further exits.
“Review of additional international organisations pursuant to Executive Order 14199 remains ongoing,” he added.
According to Rubio, the administration concluded that the affected institutions no longer align with US interests, describing many of them as redundant, mismanaged, and captured by foreign or ideological agendas.
“These institutions are unnecessary, poorly run, or pose a threat to our nation’s sovereignty, freedoms, and prosperity,” he stated.

Rubio said President Trump has drawn a firm line against continued US funding of bodies that offer little value in return.
“It is no longer acceptable to send the blood, sweat, and treasure of the American people to institutions with nothing to show for it,” he said.
He further argued that global institutions have drifted from their original purpose, becoming tools of ideological activism.
“What began as a framework for cooperation has grown into a system of global governance detached from national interests,” Rubio said.
The Secretary of State added that many of the organisations actively seek to limit American independence.
“We will not continue expending resources or diplomatic capital on institutions that conflict with our priorities,” he declared.
Rubio concluded that while the US remains open to cooperation, it will only engage where national interests are protected.
“We seek cooperation where it serves our people and will stand firm where it does not,” he said.
The US government has released a full list of the 66 affected organisations, including several UN bodies and international climate, governance, and development agency
