Nigeria-US security partnership: Bauchi airfield hosts joint intelligence fusion efforts
The United States has deployed about 200 troops and multiple MQ-9 drones to Nigeria to support ongoing counter-insurgency operations, according to a report by Reuters.
Officials from both countries confirmed that the deployment is focused strictly on intelligence gathering and training, with no involvement of American forces in frontline combat or drone strike missions.

A US defence official described the initiative as a joint response to a shared security challenge, noting, “We see this as a shared security threat,” while emphasising that the mission is limited to surveillance and advisory support.

The deployment was reportedly carried out at the request of Nigerian authorities to strengthen efforts in tracking and identifying terrorist activities across affected regions.
Nigeria’s Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, confirmed that the US personnel and drone operations are being coordinated from an airfield in Bauchi State.
He said, “This support builds on the newly established US-Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, which continues to deliver actionable intelligence to our field commanders. Our US partners remain in a strictly non-combat role, enabling operations led by Nigerian authorities.”
The MQ-9 drones, also known as Reaper drones, are high-altitude platforms capable of long-endurance missions and can be equipped for both surveillance and strike operations.
However, officials stressed that those currently deployed in Nigeria are being used solely for intelligence purposes.
