The United States has warned that corrupt Nigerian government officials could face visa ban as part of its global anti-corruption drive.

This was contained in a statement posted on Monday by the US Mission in Nigeria via its official X handle, stressing that “fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US Visas.”

Washington noted that the measure reinforces its support for Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight, adding that the US had in previous years imposed similar restrictions on politicians accused of electoral malpractice and subverting democratic processes.

Transparency advocates have recently raised alarm over alleged mismanagement of public funds and abuse of office across federal and state levels, fuelling fresh concerns about entrenched corruption.

According to the US, denying visas to compromised officials forms part of a broader strategy to entrench good governance, ensure accountability, and strengthen the rule of law in partner countries.
