Valverde Returns as Athletico Coach For Third Time

Former Barcelona coach, Ernesto Valverde, is set to return to the dug-out at Athletic Club

The Spanish coach has been appointed by the Athletic club and he is keen to return to coaching at Athletic Club after a candidate who pledged to sign him won the election for the presidency of the Spanish club on Friday.

Athletic Bilbao released an official statement on their website to announce the return of Ernesto Valverde to the club.

“Ernesto Valverde is set to officially take over as head coach of Athletic Club. The man with most matches (306) as a manager in Athletic history will hold a press conference at 18:00 CEST this evening.” the club stated.

Valverde is embarking on a third spell in charge of the Lions. During his previous stints in the San Mamés dugout, Athletic qualified for Europe five times in six seasons, one of those occasions being Champions League qualification.”

“Valverde also broke the Club’s 31-year title drought when he led the side to a 5-1 aggregate win over FC Barcelona in the 2015 Spanish Super Cup.”

Valverde, a former player, coached Athletic to a club-record 306 games in 2003-05 and 2013-17.

He has also coached Valencia, Olympiakos, Villarreal, and Espanyol.
