Nigeria’s journey towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup took a significant leap forward with a solid 2-0 win over Rwanda, highlighted by an outstanding performance from Victor Osimhen.

This victory marked the Super Eagles’ first win in the qualifiers, bringing their points total to six and elevating them to fourth place in Group C, behind South Africa, Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Dominant First Half Display Puts Nigeria in Control

At the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, the Super Eagles wasted no time in establishing their dominance.

Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s star forward, kicked things off by scoring in the 11th minute, taking full advantage of a well-executed set-piece.

Rwanda struggled to keep up with Nigeria’s pace and intensity, finding it tough to create any real scoring opportunities, even with President Paul Kagame watching from the stands.

Despite the Amavubi’s attempts to rally, Nigeria’s defense, led by captain William Troost-Ekong, held strong, ensuring they went into halftime with a clean sheet.

Just before the break, Osimhen struck again, doubling the lead and tightening Nigeria’s hold on the match.

Chelle’s Tactical Brilliance Seals the Victory

In his debut as Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle opted for an aggressive 4-2-3-1 formation that showcased Osimhen alongside Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Samuel Chukwueze.

This tactical setup allowed the Super Eagles to fully exploit their attacking capabilities, keeping Rwanda on the defensive for most of the game.

In the second half, Nigeria kept pushing forward, eager to score more goals.

But Rwanda tightened up their defense, making it tough for Nigeria to find the net again.

Osimhen, who had an outstanding game, was subbed off in the 76th minute for Tolu Arokodare, and Alhassan Yusuf came on for Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Despite a few good opportunities, the match wrapped up with Nigeria winning 2-0.

Osimhen Nears Record as Super Eagles Eye Next Challenge

With his latest two goals, Osimhen has now scored 25 times in 40 international matches, getting closer to Rashidi Yekini’s all-time Super Eagles record of 37 goals.

His impact on Nigeria’s World Cup journey is vital as the team climbs to fourth place in Group C.

Right now, Nigeria is trailing South Africa (10 points), Benin Republic (8 points), and Rwanda (7 points).

Next up, the Super Eagles will face Zimbabwe at the Uyo Township Stadium, looking to keep their winning streak alive.

Meanwhile, Rwanda will take on Lesotho, and South Africa will try to hold onto their top spot against Benin Republic.

With this hard-fought win, Nigeria has reignited their hopes for World Cup qualification.

Can they keep this momentum going and secure a place in the global tournament? Fans are definitely excited to see how they’ll perform in the upcoming matches.
