Walking in the Shadow of the Gods: A Grimoire of African Spells and Formulas – by Efe Onomake
African systems of knowledge have always treated healing, spirituality, and the natural world as a single field of study. In Walking in the Shadow of the Gods, I present the results of independent research aimed at documenting this relationship through herbs, spices, remedies, and traditional spiritual formulas used across African societies.

The book brings together over 200 recorded spells, medicinal preparations, and compounds traditionally applied to physical illness and spiritual imbalance. These materials are not presented as folklore or superstition, but as working knowledge developed through observation, ritual discipline, and long-standing practice.
This work will be of interest to readers drawn to herbology, plant studies, homeopathy, aromatherapy, and African spiritual systems such as Ifa, Igbe, and Vodoo. It also serves practitioners of African spirituality who seek historical grounding and practical reference rather than abstract theory.
Each entry reflects a wider cultural logic in which plants are understood as living forces with specific properties, relationships, and conditions for use. While the book documents known applications, it does not claim final authority. Further research and careful study of the herbs and formulas discussed is encouraged, both to deepen understanding and to preserve accuracy.
Walking in the Shadow of the Gods is intended as a reference work and a starting point. It preserves knowledge that has often remained oral or fragmented, while inviting responsible engagement with Africa’s medicinal and spiritual heritage.
