Rooney Calls for Tough Sanctions to End Racism in Football

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United legend recalled one of his most painful experiences as manager of D.C. United in Major League Soccer, when a player ran into his arms weeping after receiving horrible racial abuse.

On his new podcast for the BBC, Rooney urged for solid anti-racism education and harsher penalties for clubs to end racism in football.

He said education should be for “children, parents and grandparents,” but warned that it alone will not stop the abuse.

“For them, you have to hit the clubs,” – he added.

“If there is ignorance, the fans will still do it. Take points off them or hit them in the pocket. Otherwise it will keep on going.”

The story made headlines again when Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth alleged racial abuse during their 4-2 defeat at Liverpool, and the game was stopped temporarily in the 29th minute.

Police arrested a 47-year-old man from Liverpool on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offense.

Authorities banned him from all UK football stadiums.

Under FA Rule E20.1, the FA may fine a club or order the closure of a stadium where teams inadequately respond to incidents of racist abuse.

In 2023 the FA fined League Two side Gillingham £12,500 after supporters engaged in racist and sexist behaviour.
