The argument dates back more than a decade.

On that day in 2012, City rallied to beat QPR 3-2, and Aguero’s late winner gave Manchester City the Premier League title on goal difference.

Rooney later said Kenny should have done better and that the keeper might have let the goal in, which Kenny denies.

Kenny spoke plainly about the row: “He keeps hammering me about that [Sergio] Aguero goal, so I think me and I need to sort it out in the ring. “13 years on, he is still saying I let the goals in! It might have looked like I let them in, but I didn’t!”

He says the boxing offer represents a final attempt to close the chapter.

Rooney has stood by his opinion of the 2012 game, and fans and experts are still arguing over it online.

Kenny’s plan would turn the animosity from a news story into an actual fight, which raises issues about when it would happen, what the regulations would be, and whether former football players can really be good boxers.

For now, Kenny has thrown down a clear challenge to Wayne Rooney; if Rooney accepts, the long-running row would finally reach a public conclusion.
