According to WhatsApp, the decision aims to improve security and performance, as outdated devices can no longer support modern app features. “Meta routinely phases out support for legacy operating systems, a proactive measure to ensure the app’s security and introduce enhancements,” the company noted.

What Users Can Do

Users on older hardware are advised to back up chat histories and migrate to newer devices before June 1 to avoid service interruptions. Those unable to upgrade can consider switching to alternative messaging platforms or newer devices.

Checking System Version

Android users can check their system version by opening Settings, About Phone, and confirming that Android 5.0 or higher is installed. iPhone users can verify their software version by opening Settings, tapping General, and selecting About. If the version listed is lower than 15.1, WhatsApp will cease functioning after June 1.
