Football fans have been asking why Chelsea and Manchester City will be England’s only representatives at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

With Liverpool leading the Premier League, some wonder why they didn’t make the cut while Chelsea, who are fourth, and Man City, who sit fifth, did.

Here’s the simple reason behind their qualification.

FIFA’s Two-Club Rule: How Chelsea and Man City Qualified

Back in December, the FIFA Council met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to decide how teams would qualify for the expanded Club World Cup.

One major rule they set was that only two clubs from each country could take part.

Chelsea and Manchester City secured their spots because they are the most recent English teams to win the UEFA Champions League.

Even though Liverpool have had strong performances in recent years, they didn’t qualify because Real Madrid won the tournament during the same period, blocking England from sending more than two teams.

Huge Prize Money Up for Grabs

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup isn’t just about glory—it also comes with record-breaking prize money.

FIFA has set aside £775 million for the tournament, with £407 million to be shared among all participating clubs, no matter how well they perform.

If Chelsea or Manchester City win all their group-stage matches and go on to lift the trophy, they could earn a massive £97 million—the biggest payout in club football history.

Why This Matters for Chelsea, Man City, and English Football

For Chelsea and Man City, this tournament is a huge opportunity.

It gives them a chance to prove themselves against the world’s best clubs while also earning massive financial rewards.

Their participation also helps strengthen the reputation of English football on the global stage.

With the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 just around the corner, fans will be watching closely to see if an English club can take home the trophy.
