Prof Attahiru Jega, an ex-chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reaffirmed his belief that the President should not have the authority to appoint chairmen of the electoral body.
Jega expressed this view during a retreat for senators organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
He additionally advocated for changes to the Electoral Act, 2022 in order to eliminate uncertainties, provide more clarity, and strengthen certain sections.

Regarding the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Jega suggested that the President should no longer be empowered to appoint the Chairman and National Commissioners of INEC. This would help to remove any political bias from the Commission.
Jega highlighted the need to review the law to ensure that all election-related disputes are resolved and judgments are made prior to the swearing-in date.
