The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims of recurring banditry in Abuja, stating that reports suggesting widespread insecurity in the capital are exaggerated.
Wike made the remarks on Monday while inspecting ongoing projects in the federal capital, insisting that Abuja remains relatively secure despite isolated incidents of crime.

According to the former Rivers State governor, there is no evidence of organised banditry in the city, although he acknowledged that crimes such as kidnapping can still occur.
“I don’t believe there is banditry in Abuja… it is a city where people want to go and do all kinds of things, kidnapping, this and that,” Wike said.
He emphasised that no city in the world is completely free from crime, noting that even developed countries experience security challenges.
On Security Efforts
He referenced a previous kidnapping incident in Bwari, noting that the victims were successfully rescued by security operatives.
According to him, more attention should be given to recognising the achievements of security agencies rather than focusing only on negative reports
Public Reassurance
The minister maintained that the situation in Abuja does not amount to a pattern of banditry, urging the public to remain calm and confident in the efforts of law enforcement agencies.
He stressed that what matters most is the response and effectiveness of security agencies, which he believes have been proactive in maintaining safety in the nation’s capital.
